Dr. Howell has been a Red Sox "fanatic" since 1947, when he made his first visit to Fenway Park to watch Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, and Dom Dimaggio (see David Haberstom's book, Teammates), and the rest of the Sox. He tried to make the team when he graduated from high school, but failed to do so. Several years ago, he attended "Red Sox Fantasy Camp" with a childhood playmate, John Ferries, Dartmouth '59, Tuck '60.

Dr. Howell has skied often at Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado, both resorts being a short distance from his two former Colorado residences. He also has skied in the Alps, in Switzerland and Austria, while living in Europe.

He has jogged for more than 40 years, and has run two NYC Marathons and a number of half marathons, 10k's, and 5k's. His best marathon time was 3 hours, 41 minutes.

Prof. Howell has traveled extensively for teaching and consulting purposes, including 48 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, and South America, to virtually every Western European country, to Poland, Czechoslavakia, Hungary, and Slovenia, Russia and Georgia, Japan, and China.

Highlights include skiing in Lech, Austria; Provence and Tuscany; taking an overnight train from Moscow to St. Petersburg; Kyoto, Japan, and the Great Wall of China.

Future plans include Australia and New Zealand.
